It was a miserable Monday morning when the contestants arrived to start their 6 week adventure in the house.

Each looked a little strained as they surreptitiously eyed each other up trying to fathom each other out, knowing that these people would be the only human contact they would have for the unforeseeable future. Each contestant was a worship leader from various churches in the UK. Well at least they had that in common.

Fearful Frank looked across at Hurting Hannah and gave her a timid smile, as Performing Pam swept into the room like a whirlwind. She had such charisma! Insecure Ian shuddered. People like her always made him feel so insignificant! Over in the corner Busy Brenda was preoccupied with making sure everything was up to scratch and organised. Whilst quietly sat on the couch Resting Rita read her bible oblivious to anyone else in the room.

Yes, the next few weeks would prove to be very interesting as these unique creations knuckled down to “do life” together.

A tongue in cheek introduction perhaps but each of us has character traits that can either hold us back or set us up to move and soar in the things of God.

I’d like to introduce you to our first house mate. Fearful Frank.

Fear is one of the most common and powerful inhibitors of a worship leader. It causes us to pretend to be something or someone we’re not. It usually stems from a fear of man. Oh that our fear of the Lord would match this! The bible tells us very clearly that “The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe.” (Proverbs 29:25, NKJV).

We have to understand that we cannot please everybody all the time. That it’s OK for our congregations to prefer another’s leading style to ours. God gave each of us free will to decide. He also created us with great precision. To try and be something we’re not isn’t honouring to Him, who went to great lengths to makes us fearfully and wonderfully. If you struggle with fear fill yourself with the word of God. Find out what He says about you. Know that God will never call you to do anything without equipping you! Understand who’s doing what when you get on that platform.

Ephesians 3:20 God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within me! (Paraphrased) 1 John 2:20a but you have an anointing from the Holy One.

It’s OK to have a little nervousness before a meeting but if those nerves cause you to back off from the Holy Spirit’s lead then you’re headed down a painful road. I lived and led worship like this for years. Until one day it all came to a head and I had to decide if I was going to face this fear or give up! I realised that I lived a life of intimidation. That the devil was having a blast with me.

I made a decision that day and with the help of great pastors and friends, started to feed myself on the word of God, to quote scripture over myself, to put on the FULL armour of God and pretty soon I’d learned to fly above all that fear. Now when it returns (and yes it does) I stand and wield the sword of the word!

So dear worship leader the next time you’re scared, the next time you’re tempted to be someone else, to take the known way I encourage you, no, challenge you to take that step of faith. I promise you, you won’t fall. Just like Indiana Jones as you step out into the unknown territory God will place everything you need beneath your feet to get to where He wants you to go.  Pretty soon that which was scary will become the norm and you’ll be facing your next challenge. But hey that’s growth for you! Take up the sword and go for it! Happy flying!
